Hysterectomy
A hysterectomy is the surgical removal of the uterus. The hysterectomy may be total, meaning the complete removal of the uterus along with the connected cervix. Alternatively, there is also partial, or supracervical, with removal of the uterine body while leaving the cervix intact. Whichever the type, this procedure renders a patient unable to bear children, as does removal of the ovaries and fallopian tubes. However, it may be the last resort option for women who have failed conservative management of their gynecological issues. These could include fibroids, endometriosis, pelvic support problems, abnormal or heavy uterine bleeding, or cancer. In the past, hysterectomies were performed using a large incision on the abdomen. More recently, that has been replaced by the minimally invasive approach using operative laparoscopy techniques to achieve the same purpose. This means a quicker recovery time and return to normal daily activities. The option for a hysterectomy should always be discussed in detail with our doctor so that he may determine what is safest and most effective for you. |
