Myomectomy
A myomectomy is a surgical procedure to remove symptomatic fibroids while leaving the uterus otherwise intact. This avoids having to undergo a hysterectomy thus preserving the possibility of future childbearing. Depending on the location of the fibroids, this can be accomplished through an abdominal approach using an abdominal incision or with operative laparoscopy. This would be to remove those fibroids located near the outside of the uterus away from the uterine cavity. Conversely, fibroids located near or within the cavity can be removed via hysteroscopic myomectomy using a vaginal approach. |
