Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure (LEEP)
After an abnormal PAP result, your doctor may perform a colposcopic biopsy to reveal pre-cancerous cervical cells. The loop electrosurgical excision procedure (LEEP) is a minor surgical procedure to remove these types of cells, more specifically high grade cervical dysplasia, in order to prevent this progressing to cervical cancer. It is performed in the office setting and may only require a local anesthetic. This serves as both a diagnostic & therapeutic type of treatment, as the abnormal cells are removed while there is a further pathologic examination of the tissue. This procedure should not affect future childbearing or the ability to carry a pregnancy to term.
