Hysterosalpingogram (HSG)
Hysterosalpingography (HSG) is a radiologic procedure to investigate the shape and cavity of the uterus while also checking for the patency of the fallopian tubes. This diagnostic procedure is paramount in the work-up for infertility as tubal blockage commonly is a culprit. A radio-opaque contrast material is injected through the cervix to outline the uterus & tubes while taking a series of x-rays to observe any defects if present. More recently, the same information can be obtained from an office procedure using pelvic ultrasound via the FemVue™ apparatus, thus avoiding the radiation from x-rays and much of the discomfort involved with the procedure. In this method, saline & air are used while performing a transvaginal ultrasound for the visualization of the structures. |
