Treatment of Fibroids
A fibroid is a benign, non-cancerous tumor arising from the smooth muscle layer of the uterus called the myometrium. While most fibroids are asymptomatic, some can grow to large sizes causing abdominal & pelvic pain, heavy & painful menstruation, painful sexual intercourse, and urinary urgency. The symptoms caused by uterine fibroids usually can be controlled with non-invasive methods such as hormonal medications (i.e. birth control) and uterine artery embolization. If those treatment modalities prove unsuccessful, the fibroids can surgically be removed via myomectomy or by removing the uterus altogether by hysterectomy. |
