Treatment of Ovarian Cysts
An ovarian cyst is any collection of fluid surround by a thin wall within an ovary. It can range in size from as small as a pea to larger than a grapefruit. The contents of the cyst can also vary, from clear fluid to blood or solid contents like different types of tissue. Sometimes the cyst can be functional, meaning it is a normal part of the monthly changes within the ovary. Other times it can cause problems such as |
pelvic pain and in some cases cause the ovary to twist on itself, cutting off its own blood supply called ovarian torsion. Cysts less than 6 cm can usually be treated conservatively via birth control and observation over time by pelvic ultrasound. Those larger than 6 cm may require surgical removal which is usually done the minimally invasive route through operative laparoscopy. |
