Abnormal Bleeding Q&A

What is abnormal bleeding?

Abnormal bleeding is heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding or bleeding in between your period. A normal menstrual cycle lasts between 21 and 35 days, with a period that lasts about seven days.

Anything that differs from your normal menstrual cycle may be abnormal bleeding. Other signs and symptoms of abnormal bleeding include:

  • Bleeding during or after intercourse
  • A menstrual cycle that’s shorter than 21 days or longer than 35 days
  • Irregular periods
  • Going three to six months without a period
  • Bleeding after menopause

You can have acute or chronic abnormal bleeding.

What causes abnormal bleeding?

You can develop abnormal bleeding from many causes. Common conditions include:

  • Endometriosis
  • Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
  • Fibroids or polyps
  • Hormonal birth control
  • Ectopic pregnancy
  • Miscarriage
  • Gynecological cancer

You may also experience abnormal bleeding if you have a bleeding disorder or are taking blood thinners.

When should I seek medical care for abnormal bleeding?

It’s not unusual to have abnormal bleeding when you first start menstruating during puberty or in the months or years leading up to menopause. However, you should seek medical care at Jeffrey Yu, MD PC, anytime there’s a change in your menstrual cycle.

Dr. Yu is a skilled OB/GYN and performs thorough evaluations to find the cause of your abnormal bleeding. He reviews your menstrual cycle and symptoms, gynecological and medical history, and performs a physical and pelvic exam.

Dr. Yu may also run tests to confirm or rule out the cause of your abnormal bleeding, such as testing for sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), Pap smear, or blood work to check hormone levels. He also does in-office ultrasounds to evaluate your reproductive organs.

What are the treatments for abnormal bleeding?

Treatment for abnormal bleeding depends on the cause. Initially, Dr. Yu may recommend conservative care such as over-the-counter (OTC) pain medication, hormonal birth control, or tranexamic acid (to treat heavy menstrual bleeding).

If medical interventions fail to improve your abnormal bleeding, Dr. Yu may recommend a procedure to treat the underlying cause, such as a myomectomy to remove fibroids or laparoscopic surgery to treat endometriosis.

Dr. Yu also performs endometrial ablation to treat heavy menstrual bleeding in those who have no future pregnancy plans.
